Y. ; Bechis, K. P. Abstract Time-variable emission from the 2.6-mm, v = 0, J = 1 - 0, transition of (C-12)(O-16) has been observed from the Mira variables Chi Cygni and Mira itself. The time variation could be due to variable vibrational excitation of the CO molecules as a result of changing stellar luminosity. A narrow CO emission line observed from Mira could be enhanced by stimulated emission. CO emission was also detected in five other stars.
