Abstract

ECKERT, HELEN M. Variability in Skill Acquisition. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1974, 45, 487-489. Learning curves from 3 pursuit rotor experiments were analyzed by repeated-measures ANOVA. Subjects included 215 elementary school and 32 high school boys and girls. Length of trials and forms and speed used on the rotor task varied among experiments. However, reliability of variables was similar. Variability increased with age and ease of task, contradicting Bruner's (1973) conception of modification of performance toward less variability. Relative intraindividual variability seemed the most appropriate index of developmental variability. This measure decreased with age and increased with task complexity within age, accommodating the hypotheses of both Bruner (1973) and Fiske and Rice (1955).
