Abstract

A love of sport almost saw Vania Hungria become a physical education teacher. “But at university I soon realised doing sport and teaching sport were not the same thing!” Hungria tells The Lancet Haematology. She then transferred to a medical degree at the Santa Casa de São Paulo Medical School (Sao Paulo, Brazil), where she realised her interest lay more in clinical medicine than surgical disciplines. “During my residency at Santa Casa Hospital, I got to work with and bond with many young patients with leukaemia.
