Abstract
There are two types of heart valves: atrioventricular and ventricular-arterial. The former are complex structures consisting of leaflets, tendinous cords and papillary muscles. Ventriculo-arterial valves are simple structures and consist of three valve leaflets. Valvular heart diseases are currently the fourth leading cause for cardiovascular pathology. During the past years, major advances have occurred in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for patients with valvular heart disease. The two most frequent valve diseases nowadays are aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation, both with predominance of degenerative etiology. Echocardiography is the imaging technique of choice in the diagnosis and follow-up of valvulopathies. The continuing progress in valve repair techniques and the introduction of percutaneous interventional techniques have developed and improved the treatment.
