Abstract

SynopsisMarriage problems, with concomitant psychosocial disorders, rank among the most frequently reported emotional difficulties. This suggests a community need for effective psychotherapy programs to mitigate marriage and relationship conflicts. However, to satisfactorily determine the effectiveness of psychotherapy in dealing with marital or any other problems, evaluative research must be socially sensitive and methodologically sound.A major methodological issue in psychotherapy research concerns values. The values of both the investigator and the therapist is an issue that requires consideration when making a judgment about the effectiveness of psychotherapy as a treatment modality. The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the influence and role of values in psychotherapy and in the assessment of its outcome, and to point out various ways of minimising the confounding effects of values.
