Abstract
This article provides an insight into the study of the minor-staged turn-to-turn stator winding faults, implicating fewer than 5% of the total phase winding turns in a three-phase induction motor. A mathematical model of the motor including varying severity of stator-winding inter-turn faults was realized in MATLAB Simulink and was validated by analyzing the negative sequence impedance, calculated from the 3-phase stator current and voltage signals. The trend of variation of negative sequence impedance was studied to differentiate between the unbalanced supply voltage, inter-turn faults, and the combined case of both the voltage unbalance and inter-turn fault conditions at varying load levels. The proposed model provides a satisfactory level of accuracy in comparison with the experimental results, which may strengthen the acceptability of the simulation model of the motor.
