Abstract
The vaginal route of drug administration has historically been used for treating local female-related conditions. Examples include the administration of steroid hormones for contraception, oxytocin for labor induction, or antibacterial, antifungal agents for treatment of infection. The vaginal route also has considerable potential for delivering systematically acting drugs in the female population. The vagina has a reasonably large surface area, good blood supply, and acceptable permeability to a wide range of drugs. Unfortunately, the vagina is also subject to cyclic changes both in women and in some animal models (Okada, 1991).KeywordsUssing ChamberVaginal EpitheliumVaginal TissueVaginal RingVaginal RouteThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
