Abstract

The tremendous growth of vacuum melted products in the specialty steel industry has been triggered by the demand for materials of much improved performance and greatly increased reliability. Much progress has been made in understanding and controlling metallurgical reactions taking place in vacuum melting processes. The various industrial vacuum melting techniques are considered, compared, and particular features of each process outlined. Development and operation of modern equipment for vacuum steelmaking are briefly discussed. Emphasis is placed on the many advantages and benefits steel users are provided with vacuum melted products. Improvements in properties and performance of various special steels are illustrated. The rapidly expanding applications and markets for vacuum melted specialty steels are outlined.
