Abstract

(1982, Science 218: 295-296) indicate that NKC induced by either T. cruzi or poly (I: C) can kill free trypanosomes directly in vitro. The results of our experiments reported herein fail to support a direct role for IFN and NKC in resistance to this infection as has been shown by others in different host-parasite systems (Rager-Zisman and Bloom, 1982, Springer Seminars in Immunopath. 4: 397-400). The ultimate importance of the IFN-NKC system in murine Chagas' disease is still open to question. This study was supported by grant AI 12770 (NIH) and from a grant from the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases UNDP/WHO/World Bank. We are indebted to Dr. Barry Bloom for his continued support.
