Abstract

Experimental study on the unsteady flow characteristics behind a V-gutter was carried out for a water flow of the Reynolds number Re=5×103. The experiments were conducted with five blockage ratios from 0.2 to 0.6. The experimental data of the velocity were obtained by using PIV to map the unsteady velocity field around the vortex-generating region. Based on the measured data, influences of the blockage on time-averaged velocities and turbulent intensity distributions were examined. Moreover, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) was performed on fluctuating vorticity fields to identify the predominant modes of vortical fluid motions.
