Abstract
Abstract A description of a practical interferometer system based on the principle of post-detector correlation is followed by a short account of an instrument incorporating this principle. This instrument has been used at Jodrell Bank for measurements of the angular diameters and structures of the radiation from the quiet sun and the sources Cygnus and Cassiopeia. The method of computing the results is indicated, and a short account is given of a synthetic source which is used to calibrate the equipment. Reference is made to a method of obtaining the gradient of the correlation function by the use of three adjacent operating frequencies. The results of the measurements on Cassiopeia and Cygnus are given in Part II of this paper.
