A follow‐up study regarding the effects of different forms of eye prophylaxis against neonatal gonococcal ophthalmia and a descriptive study of maternity and neonatal care, comprising 136 mothers and their healthy newborns were performed. At birth all infants were randomly divided into three different eye prophylaxis groups in a double‐blind fashion: 1 % silver nitrate, 10 % Hexarginum, and physiological saline. The mothers were interviewed by telephone three months post partum and answered questionnaire at six months. The aim was to examine whether there were any long‐term side effects of eye prophylaxis, and to study whether the mothers’experiences of the events around birth, and her feelings during the following months were influenced by the type of prophylaxis given. Aner 8–10 weeks, when nearly all eye irritation had disappeared in the saline group, it was reported that 21 % of the infants in the silver nitrate group and 12 % in the Hexarginum group still had persistent irritation in the eyes. The answers about the mothers’experiences of delivery and their first contact with their newborns did not differ between the prophylaxis groups. However, the study introduced many questions concerning routine procedures. Thus, as many as 32 % of full‐term infants had been separated from their mothers and most of them placed in an incubator within 10 minutes after birth. Episiotomy had been performed in 40 %. A frequency of 24 % of colicky cry/pain (3–4 hours a day for 4 weeks or more) was reported at three months. Since significant relations were found between colic and some events around birth it seems necessary to examine the medical indications for these interventions.
