Abstract

Self-assembled metalla-rectangle [(ƞ6-p-cymene)4Ru4(C6H2O4)2(2)2](CF3SO3)4 (3) was prepared by the reaction of dinuclear half-sandwich ruthenium(II) complex [Ru2(ƞ6-p-cymene)2(C6H2O4)Cl2] (1) with a bis-pyridyl-bis-amide linker (2) in methanol in the presence of AgO3SCF3. This new stable discrete 2D structure was fully characterized by analytical techniques including elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 1H–1H COSY, 1H–13C HMQC spectroscopy, and HR-ESI-MS spectrometry. A UV–Vis study was also carried out for both ruthenium complex (1) and metalla-rectangle (3). The UV–Vis absorption studies and Job’s plot of multi-carboxylate anions (sodium oxalate and sodium citrate) in presence of metalla-rectangle 3 showed adduct formation in a 1:1 fashion.
