Abstract

Clay soil is categorized as a poor subgrade material because it has a low soil bearing capacity. One of the parameters in terms of soil bearing capacity is the value of soil shear strength. To improve it, natural resources can be used by utilizing river sand as a substitute for clay and adding cement as a binder for clay granules with river sand. Mixture variations used for river sand are 10%, 15% and 20% as a substitute for clay and cement of 5% of the dry weight of clay and sand. The soil tested came from clay in the Parit Tujuh area, Pemali District and river sand taken by small rivers from the Air Bakung River, Lubuk Kelik River, and Penyamun River in Bangka Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands Province, Indonesia. The test carried out is direct shear testing. The test standard uses the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). From the results of the study it was found that the shear strength of the soil increased with the increase in the percentage of river sand and 5% cement compared to unmixed clay, namely 113.302 kN/m2 at 20% variation of Sungai Penyamun Sand plus 5% cement.
