Abstract
The development of large seale desalting of sea water and other saline waters is exposed. Distillation plants both LTV and MSP are characterized along with scale prevention and materials of construction, Membrane methods: electrodialysis and reverse osmosis are described including membrane properties and configuration. The examples of large desalination plants are cited. Huge quantities of mine waters associated with black coal mining pose quite a serious problem in Poland. The concentration of salt reaches as much as 200 g per litre. Both main rivers in Poland, the Vistula and the Odra, are handicapped by these saline mine waters.
