Abstract

Thermal sources of energy produce two-thirds of India’s electricity needs, producing tremendous amounts of ash. Bottom ash constitutes about 20% of this combustion product and is dumped in ponds creating an environmental problem [7]. Very little research has been done on bottom ash in utilisation is concrete. Some researchers have established that its pozzolanic properties can be improved by grinding. In this research, the bottom ash was ground for various degrees to have varying fineness to improve its pozzolanic reaction. The particle size distribution, scanning electron microscopy, specific gravity, lime reactivity, the compressive strength of various samples bottom ash has been investigated and compared with that of fly ash and cement.
