Abstract

Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is a complementary imaging tool to coronary angiography for the evaluation of coronary disease. It provides an overview of the atherosclerotic plaque and has a clinical application of considerable importance, as it helps to define whether or not lesions merit an intervention when coronary angiography on its own is not clear. Similarly, it helps to optimise coronary interventions, including those in the trunk, bifurcations, and chronic occlusions, with aim of decreasing the sub-expansion or poor positioning of the stent, and thus minimises future clinical events like thrombosis and the restenosis of the stents. Additionally, it helps to perform an analysis of the histological composition of the atherosclerotic plaque, on being able to identify risk characteristics for coronary events associated with the plaque.
