Abstract

Ørbo, M.C., Aslaksen, P.M. & Vittersø, J. (2005). Does one have to have burnt the candle at both ends in order to get burnout? Validation and prediction of burnout among university students in Norway. Nordisk Psykologi, 57, 417–434 With confirmatory factor analysis, data from 153 university students were used to investigate the structural validity of the Maslach Burnout Inventory for students (MBI-55). A modified threefactor burnout model fitted the data well. The tree factors are Emotional Exhaustion, Cynicism and Professional Efficacy. With the same sample, predictors of the burnout factors were analysed by means of multiple regressions. Three second-order personality factors were independently found to predict different aspects of burnout. Of particular interest was the relation between the personality factor named Engagement and the three dimensions of burnout. Engagement was negatively associated with Reduced Professional Efficacy, and unrelated to Emotional Exhaustion and Cynicism. Hence the idea that one must “burn” to “burn out” is only partly supported in the current data.
