Abstract

Abstract Tandem particle accelerators produce beams of atomic nuclei which are used for nuclear physics or materials science experiments. The U.S. Naval Academy tandem has predominately been used only for proton beams during the past 27 years. This project developed beams of projectiles more massive than helium for the first time and used them for materials science applications. Special scattering chambers were developed for ion implantation and the study of scintillating materials.
