Abstract

The commons net component provides classes that make using various protocols such as Telnet, Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), and so on easier. The rationale for the project has been nicely stated on the Web site as follows: “Java doesn’t provide an API for common Internet protocols. Many applications need to communicate via well-known Internet protocols such as FTP, SMTP, and Telnet.” In this chapter, you will explore the Net component’s capabilities with regard to commonly used protocols, and you will see examples that demonstrate how to use the component. Table 10-1 shows the component details.KeywordsUser Datagram ProtocolFile Transfer ProtocolPublic ClassMessage NumberClient ClassThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
