Using natural stone for buildings - an analysis of educational programs in Romania

Abstract

Abstract The topic of sustainability is of utmost importance today, especially referring to construction industry - a sector that contributes with almost 40% to the global CO2 emissions. This subject comprises various areas of research and knowledge and one study cannot cover all of them; the studies are usually focusing on a restrained field starting from one of the sustainability characteristics. Some principles of sustainable development are referring to the use of natural products, using local raw materials, using traditional construction methods, and respecting the cultural heritage. Therefore, in this context, the use of natural stone could be a sustainable solution especially in communities that historically used stone as a building material. Considering the value which the use of natural stone in new and existing buildings could bring for a more sustainable society, the current study aims to explore how topics like use of natural stone, stone processing, stone restauration and others related to them are included in the educational programs and curricula of higher education and vocational education and training in Romania. The results are compared with the situation from other European countries in order to formulate some conclusions and recommendations.
