Abstract

of the literature I teach. It is beautiful, inspiring, and intellectually challenging. But I know British literature does not appeal to everyone. The seniors where I teach actually have the choice of taking British or multicultural literature. They sign up for British literature, not because they love Shakespeare, they tell me, but because the course description for multicultural literature mentions a portfolio of writing. That sounds like too much work for senior year, they say. Most of my seniors are content to just get by until graduation. Learning is, at best, secondary. I, however, must work to motivate them to learn about literature-to show what it can do for their lives and what it can do for their world.
