Abstract

Development-oriented television (DOTV) is a new intervention that can motivate people to improve their potential and way of life. This study determined the level of readiness of Ibadan as a community for DOTV and proposed actions for the intervention. It used key informant interview to collect data from 12 key informants in Ibadan. It explored a local community’s readiness for development-oriented television in Ibadan, Nigeria based on four dimensions of readiness and on sustainability. The sustainability factors included enabling policies and programs; manpower resources for TV; television infrastructure and facilities; and financial resources. Data were analyzed using thematic coding and citation of relevant excerpts from KII transcriptions. The respondents, as potential stakeholders, consisted of men and women in their middle age, married, educated, and employed in white-collar jobs in Ibadan for 5-10 years. They watched television daily particularly news on private stations to be informed about events in and out of the country. Findings showed very high to high level of readiness in some of the factors of sustainability of DOTV. The study proposed several actions to increase level of readiness on community on sustainability of DOTV.
