Abstract

The pictorial data structure based on 2D strings provides an efficient method for iconic indexing in image database systems. Previous approaches ignore the sizes of and distances between objects. These representations have deficiencies in picture reconstruction, similarity retrieval, and spatial reasoning. In this paper, we propose a new spatial knowledge representation scheme called 2D C +-strings as well as a picture reconstruction algorithm. As a result, our scheme offers the following major advantages: (1) more accuracy in picture reconstruction; (2) less ambiguity in similarity retrieval; (3) reasoning about relative sizes, locations, and distances for a symbolic picture is possible.
