Abstract

A description of the systems approach for planning and implementing a token economy system in a school setting is presented. Use of this approach in problem identification and solution prior to the implementation of a token economy program minimizes problems associated with its development and implementation. The three basic steps of the systems approach are described; these are the mission profile, the functional analysis, and the method-means. The advantageous use of these steps in planning a token economy is illustrated by a systematic evaluation of a token economy implemented in a sixth-grade setting. Successful use of a systems approach in the planning stages of a token economy should help one decide whether or not to implement the program in a given setting.
