Abstract
A special biaxial extensometer is suggested for measuring longitudinal and transverse strains in a prescribed area of specimen surface and the phase shift between them. Use of the extensometer makes it possible to eliminate random and systematic errors in determining the phase shift which occur in the case of using strain gages. Results are presented for designing and testing the extensometer and also a procedure for measuing the phase shift between longitudinal and transverse strains when it is applied to the measuring system.
