Abstract
ABSTRACT THE light transmission and reflectance character-istics of white fir (Abies concolor) were investi-gated as part of a seed viability testing program. The viability of this seed is typically 30 to 50 percent and, therefore, any means of eliminating nonviable seeds will conserve expensive seed and nursery space and also reduce operating costs associated with over-planting. The reflectance characteristic of the seed was used to segregate a single sample into lots. Each lot was germinated and the results show a strong correlation between the reflectance parameters and viability.
