Abstract

The ethnographic approach refers to a descriptive and interpretive process used in research which aims to understand individuals and their behavior from their perspective and sociocultural context. It is presented as a possible alternative methodological approach to the methods of the analytic‐empirical perspective which dominates the research in the field of home economics. The objectives of this article are: (1) to establish the significance of an alternative theoretical structure and methodological approach to research within the area of textiles and clothing, (2) to examine the use of the ethnographic approach as an interpretive science perspective by reviewing the textile and clothing research literature, and (3) to illustrate the application and compatibility of the ethnographic approach as interpretive science to the range of human problems addressed in the study of textiles and clothing.
