Abstract

The construct of defensive orientation is elaborated as a bipolar continuum which contrasts internal vs external styles in reacting to environmental events, paralleling the delineations in object relations theory. The tendency to accept feedback was hypothesized to be a function of defensive orientation; their relationship was tested by analyzing the reactions of 63 students to both fictitious and veridical feedback about personality tests. Results confirmed the hypothesis.
