Abstract

Relining an immediate denture is important for patient comfort and tissue healing. During the healing period, a number of provisional relining proceduresmay be necessary tomaintain comfort and efficiency. However, the extraction sockets or surgical sites may not heal completely in the first fewweeks. If the impressionmaterial or resilient liner flows into the unhealed sites, there will be protrusions on the intaglio surface of the denture. These protrusionsmay delay wound healing and cause an irregular contour to the alveolar ridge. The projections can be removed by a sharp instrument or an acrylic bur; however, it may be difficult to trim a resilient liner or acrylic resin smoothly. This article presents a technique to block out the surgical sites before relining the denture.
