Abstract

Reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) intensity oscillations have been observed in II–VI compound semiconductors. The observation of RHEED intensity oscillations has provided the opportunity to fabricate ultrathin layered structures with one monolayer resolution; these structures involve ZnSe, the dilute magnetic semiconductor (Zn, Mn)Se, and the “hypothetical” zincblende magnetic semiconductor MnSe. The RHEED intensity oscillations enabled the growth of a series of two-dimensional magnetic semiconductor structures consisting of one, three, and four monolayers of zincblende MnSe separated by approximately 45 Å of ZnSe. Photoluminescence studies in the presence of an external magnetic field have been employed to explore the effects of reduced dimensionality on the antiferromagnetic ordering of zincblende MnSe. This paper describes the RHEED intensity oscillations which have been observed in ZnSe and MnSe and the magnetic behaviour of the resultant 2D superlattice structures.
