Abstract
In metropolitan cities like Hong Kong, it is densely populated and most people live in privately owned premises of reinforced concrete residential buildings. Owing to material deterioration under (a) environmental exposure, (b) poor construction workmanship, (c) lack of proper maintenance and (d) alteration of premises into sub-divided flats with bathrooms, water may seep through the floor slabs of the premises and infiltrate into the subject premises below, and this create nuisance to the subject premises. In this paper, the causes of deterioration of concrete material are elaborated.
