Abstract

Electrical impedance measurements can provide much useful information on cerebral haemodynamics in ill newborn infants. However, the analysis of the pusatile impedance signal presents a number of problems. These are due to the electrical noise generated by other monitoring equipment in the neonatal intensive care unit, the presence of a strong breathing component within the impedance signal and frequent movement artefacts. Algorithms based on techniques such as digital filtering, coherent averaging and template matching have been developed to deal with these problems. The continuous analysis of the pulsatile impedance waveforms to be carried out automatically.
