Abstract

The author describes and gives examples of three types of laughter to avoid in psychotherapy-laughter that is psychonoxious, defensive or distracting. He also shows how laughter can be useful: as a way of deepening or lightening feeling expression, as a method for increasing insight and as a pathway for improving the relationship between therapist and client by emphasizing their common humanity.
