Abstract

A small but highly vocal group of conservative chemists have opened up a new front in America’s “Culture Wars” by refusing to honour prescriptions for emergency contraception. Though relatively few cases have been documented the anti-abortion pharmacists and their supporters have launched a high-profile campaign defending their position in the media. Liberals have answered with demands of their own calling for laws to force chemists to dispense all legal prescriptions and to loosen current restrictions on emergency contraceptives. The drug at the centre of the controversy— Plan B a levonorgestrel preparation sold by Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc (Woodcliff Lake NJ USA)—prevents pregnancy when taken within 72 h of unprotected sex by inhibiting ovulation interfering with fertilisation and blocking implantation in the uterine wall.
