Abstract
AbstractThere are two major types of volatile organic chemicals involving vapor intrusion (VI), chlorinated solvents, and petroleum products, the VI process of which are usually called chlorinated vapor intrusion (CVI) and petroleum vapor intrusion (PVI), respectively. The major difference between CVI and PVI is that chlorinated solvents are considered non-biodegradable in CVI risk assessments, while the oxygen-limited biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons is recommended by US EPA to be included in PVI risk assessments. The EPA’s VI database by the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) focuses on chlorinated chemicals, and there is also an EPA’s PVI database supported by the US EPA’s Office of Underground Storage Tanks (UST).
