Abstract
Rust on Ladino white clover, Trifolium repens, was observed in a greenhouse in Raleigh, North Carolina, on clones transplanted from field plots near Salisbury, North Carolina. The spermogonial, aecial, uredinial, and telial stages and spores were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The fungus produces a type 4 spermogonium, a cupulate aecium, and uredinial and telial pustules lacking peridia. This rust, identified as Uromyces trifoliirepentis var. trifolii-repentis, is not widespread, nor is it presently thought to limit forage production in North Carolina. This is the first characterization of this rust using SEM and paraffin sectioning techniques. Clover rust taxonomy is discussed.
