Abstract

Background: Despite the frequency, expense, and morbidity of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in the pediatric population, the familial occurrence of UTIs has not been well studied. Methods: Standardized medical and family histories were collected in 75 cases of UTI in female children along with 300 race and ethnicity matched controls. UTI was defined by urinalysis and culture. Results: In the cases of UTI, grandmothers and brothers of the cases had significantly more UTIs. Rates of skin infections, otitis media and pneumonia were not significantly different between cases and controls. A constipation history was significantly associated with UTIs. Conclusions: UTIs have a familial expression pattern; additionally, they are associated with constipation and may be associated with otitis media.
