Abstract
ABSTRACT Cores from six subsurface boreholes drilled by British Petroleum Minerals, Coal Division, in 1980, to depths up to 620 m in the lower Trent River Formation of the Parksville area (southern Comox Basin) yielded benthic and planktic foraminifera of the following species, restricted to the upper Santonian to lower Campanian stages: Neoflabellina jarvisi, Stensioina pommerana, Planularia sp. A, Rugoglobigerina pilula, Globotruncana linneana, and, Marginotruncana cf. coronata. In addition, an extensive, longer ranging, Upper Cretaceous, mainly benthic, agglutinated and calcareous foraminiferal fauna occurs. Other fossils include ostracoda, crinoid stems, echinoid spines, fish teeth, Inoceramus orientalis var. ambiguus (earliest Campanian), numerous Inoceramus prisms, and rare ammonites Pachydiscus haradai, (late Santonian-earliest Campanian). The lower Trent River shale is silty and indurated, and the section also contains beds of conglomerate, sandstone, and a few thin coals, as well as intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks. Sedimentological and paleontological data, including foraminiferal calcareous/agglutinated and benthic/planktic ratios, and the presence of depth-restricted genera, indicate paleoenvironments ranging from nonmarine, coal bearing strata through inner and outer shelf to upper slope. Faunas, and microfaunal comparisons with microfaunas from surface sections in the lower Trent River and Qualicum formations of the Comox Basin, and with the Haslam Formation of the Nanaimo Basin to the south, are documented.
