Abstract
A PUBLICATION entitled “Upper Winds at Cairo andKhartoum”, which constitutes Paper No. 27 of the Physical Department of the Ministry of Public Works, Egypt, has been issued. It summarises the results of many thousands of measurements of upper wind made with the aid of pilot balloons at Helwan (25 km. south of Cairo) and Khartoum, the author being L. J. Sutton, director of the Egyptian Meteorological Service. The bulk of the paper is made up of statistical tables showing the frequency of occurrence of winds from the different directions, and the frequency of different speeds from each of the directions at various heights. There are also figures showing the resultant winds in each month at the surface, 500 metres, 1000 metres, and so on up to about 4000 or 5000 metres; and in the case of Khartoum, mean values for the rainy season (May-October) and the dry season (November-April).
