Abstract
Unusual acne conglobata case mimicking cervicofacial actinomycosis: A case report with literature review
Highlights
Actinomycosis is a bacterial infection caused by Gram positive, anaerobic or microaerophilic bacilli, Actinomyces spp
In spite of the serious clinical condition of deep inflammatory cysts with concomitant discomfort, the authors decided to introduce a low dose of oral prednisone (30 mg/day) along with oral Amoxiciline/clavulanate compound (2x1 g/day)
It is difficult to say whether the case described was complicated by actinomycosis; some clinical dates suggested it, but in spite of numerous systemic antibiotics used prior to the microbiological examination, its negative result is not surprising
Summary
Actinomycosis is a bacterial infection caused by Gram positive, anaerobic or microaerophilic bacilli, Actinomyces spp. While acne vulgaris is a very common disease, the cases of actinomycosis are relatively rare. While the clinical picture obviously suggested acne, authors hypothesised that there might be an actinomycosis as a complication or as a separate phenomenon.
