Research Article| April 01 2019 Untouchable: Joseph Smith’s Use of the Law as Catalyst for Assassination Alex D. Smith Alex D. Smith Alex D. Smith is a historian with the Joseph Smith Papers in the Church History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has co-edited six volumes in the Journals and Documents series and is currently editing the Nauvoo journals of William Clayton. He holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in U.S. History. His publications focus on Nauvooera Mormon and mid-19th-century western Illinois history. He has been employed as document editor for the Joseph Smith Papers since 2003.
