Abstract

The following summary covers research by United States's scientists published in journals during the nominal period 1979 to 1982, inclusive. Much excellent work published in the same journals by scientists from other countries has been passed over. The last half year 1982 could not be covered due to publication deadlines. For the same reason, research published in late 1978 has been included which was not discussed in the previous quadrennial report. The summary and bibliography are not exhaustive insofar as local institutional reports and journals not ordinarily dealing with the subject have not been searched through.
