Abstract

A charged particle, released in a constant electric field, will suffer a jiggeling motion around the classical orbit due to the effect of electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations. It is demonstrated that the radiative power from the particle, cast in the form of emission of quanta, agrees with the classical Larmor formula, provided the proper acceleration is taken to be the mean value ā = qE/m, where E is the accelerating field. The effect of the vacuum fluctuations is included regarding the oscillating charge as an Unruh-Davies counter excited/dexcited with respect to the classical hyperbolic orbit.
