Abstract
In this issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Bronicki and colleagues1 conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 studies of prospective randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled trials of pediatric patients who received 1 or more doses of corticosteroids (CSs) or placebo before cardiac surgery. The objective was to understand whether CS use per se was harmful or beneficial, rather than to study dose responsiveness. The authors’ initial population included patients within all The Society of Thoracic Surgeons-European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (STAT) categories and consisted of 10 studies and 758 patients.
