Abstract

This study, which involved 509 students at two southeastern universities, sought to determine how many students use the Internet on a regular basis and to determine how many of the regular Internet users engage in seven types of online activities. In their respective classes, the students anonymously completed surveys and data was later analyzed according to the students' majors (computer information systems [CIS]; business other than CIS, education; other). The percent of regular Internet users in all majors combined was found to be 42.8%. A larger percent of CIS majors (81.1%) were regular Internet users than were students in other majors: business other than CIS (50.4%), other (48.6%) and education (30.6%). The number of students within the various majors who use the Internet to engage in the various types of online activities also varied according to major.
