Abstract
University presses are critical in the global ecosystem of scholarly communications. In providing a global picture of university presses and their contribution to scholarly communications, this entry first highlights the historical background, geographic representation, mission, and value proposition of the global university press landscape. Then it examines the organizational and governance structure by territory, identifying the business models of both commercial and nonprofit university presses. Next, the publishing programs of many university presses are described. The subsequent section highlights university presses that have adopted innovative use of technology in the digital era. Finally, future trends, such as consolidation and mergers, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on workflow and staffing, and digital platforms including Open Access and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in publishing and further developments in technology are explored.
