Abstract

This chapter reviews the historical background and structure of United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). The UNITAR is an autonomous institution within the United Nations system, supported by voluntary contributions from member States, foundations, and other nongovernmental sources. It was established in 1965 by the United Nations Secretary General, in accordance with United Nations General Assembly Resolution 1934 of December 1963. The Institute was founded to enhance, through training and research, the effectiveness of the UN in achieving its major objectives, in particular the maintenance of peace and security, and the promotion of economic and social development. The Institutes policy is formulated by an international Board of Trustees. Twenty-four statesmen, government officials, and scholars from around the world are appointed to serve in their individual capacities. The UN Secretary General, the President of the General Assembly, the President of the Economic and Social Council, and the Executive Director of the Institute are ex officio members of the Board.
