Abstract

As of 2001, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) opened in Hiroshima a liaison office for Asia and Pacific. Its objective is to fulfill the mandate of UNITAR through training activities based on the priorities and needs of the countries in the region II. The Training Department is in charge of developing training contents, functional capacity and training methodologies as well as of organizing and delivering training activities. It is responsible for the bulk of the Institute's operational activities, which are organized around thematic clusters in three units: Environment, Governance and Peace, Security and Diplomacy. The training approach of UNITAR follows the principle of continuous evaluation of its training activities and equally comprises assessments of specific national, regional or sub-regional capacity development needs. The national profile concept, which is now used by several UNITAR training programmes, was originally created by the Chemicals and Waste Management Programme.
