Abstract

The Eighth General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics opened on August 19, 1948, at the University of Oslo as scheduled. Its first general meeting was attended by His Majesty King Haakon VII and Crown Prince Olav. Halvor Solberg, President of the Norwegian National Committee made an address of welcome. This was followed by addresses by Norwegian Foreign Secretary Halvard M. Lange and Vice‐Chairman Brynjulf Bull of the City Council. Response was made by Acting President of the Union N. E. Nørlund of Denmark. Following this was the first plenary assembly of the Union at which the delegates and guests were advised of the action of the Executive Committee and the Council of the Union at their meetings during the first two days preceding the formal opening of the General Assembly.
